A man was killed and five others were injured two factions of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party clashed over establishing supremacy in Nakobaria village of Kaliganj upazila in Jhenaidah on Sunday.

The deceased is Mohabbat Ali, 60, son of late Hobibar Rahman, a resident of the same village in the upazila.


Quoting locals, Kaliganj police officer-in-charge Shahidul Islam Hawlader said that there had been a long-standing dispute between BNP activists Nazrul Islam Molla and Arif Hossain over establishing supremacy in the area.

As a sequel to the dispute, supporters of the two groups swooped on each other with locally made sharp weapons at around 8:00am, leaving six people of the both the groups injured.

Later, locals rescued the injured and took them to Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex where on-duty doctors referred Mohabbat to Faridpur Medical College Hospital.

Mohabbat succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at the hospital at noon, the police officer said.

On information, a team of police rushed to the scene and brought the situation under control.

Additional police personnel were deployed in the area to avert any kind of untoward situation, the OC said, adding that legal action would be taken against those involved in the incident.

Shahidul Islam Hawlader and Nazrul Islam Molla, however, could not be reached over the phone despite repeated attempts for their comments in this regard.
